Established in 1809, Waynesville is the seat of Haywood County and is known as the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. But the Smokies are not all that the area has to offer. Parts of the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway also encompass the area.
Turn of the century buildings and brick streets are the setting for great shopping in Waynesville's many boutiques, galleries and specialty shops. A number of restaurants and bars also make this a pleasant destination. Waynesville is experiencing something of a renaissance these days with new businesses opening frequently.
Waynesville hosts a number of festivals & craft fairs throughout the year including the Ramp Festival, the Trout Festival and the International Festival. In addition, twice a month during July and August, the street is blocked off in front of the courthouse for free dances with bluegrass bands. Main Street sidewalk sales are common in the summer and in the fall, the Farmer's Market comes to town.
The Shelton House Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts features the states' finest handicrafts housed in a nationally registered historic site. The Haywood Area Repertory Theatre (HART) presents a variety of entertaining performances throughout the year and the Waynesville Recreation Area is available if you enjoy tennis or basketball. Other facilities at the Rec area include a swimming pool, softball and baseball fields, a fitness trail, a horse show ring and lots more.
Be sure to stop in at the Chamber of Commerce at 112 Walnut Street when you are in town. They'll be glad to help you to find your way around.
